The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is proud to announce that Mr. Luciano Coutinho, President of the Brazilian Development Bank (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social - BNDES), has been appointed as the Brazilian recipient of the 2013 Person of the Year Award.

Mr. Coutinho holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University (USA) and is a guest professor at Universidade de Campinas (Unicamp). The major focus of his academic studies has always been the industrial policy and the real side of economy.
An expert in industrial and international economics, Mr. Coutinho has written several books and articles published in Brazil and abroad. In 1994, he coordinated the Study on the Competitiveness of Brazilian Industry. Between 1985 and 1988, he was Executive Secretary for the Ministry of Science and Technology. Mr. Coutinho holds a B.A. in Economics from Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and received the "Gastão Vidigal Award" for best economics student in São Paulo. With a Master's degree in Economics from the Institute of Economic Research of Universidade de São Paulo (USP), he has been a guest professor at various universities - São Paulo, Paris XIII, and Texas - as well as at Instituto Ortega y Gasset. Mr. Coutinho was also a tenured professor at Unicamp. Until taking office as President of BNDES, he was Partner at LCA Consultores, acting as a consulting specialist in competition defense, foreign trade, and economic inspections.

BNDES was founded in 1952 and has become one of Brazil's main instruments for fostering the expansion of the country's industry and infrastructure. Over its history, BNDES has expanded its activities to support exports and sustain the growth and modernization of Brazilian production.

The Person of the Year Gala Dinner Awards, which, since 1970, has been promoted annually by The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., honors two outstanding leaders who have been particularly instrumental in forging closer ties between Brazil and the United States. Over 800 leaders from the international business, financial, and diplomatic communities convene in New York City each year at this traditional gala to pay tribute to the honorees.

The 2013 Person of the Year Gala Dinner Awards will take place at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City on Thursday, May 16, 2013.
